マレーシア Maybank 積極的な海外展開で成長する

マレーシア最大の銀行MayBankはASEANの銀行で４番目に資産が大きい銀行です。成長のために、今後も交易が拡大すると予想される中国を中心に積極的に展開するとのこと。

成長のために、アジアを中心とした海外展開を図るのは日本の銀行だけではありません。中国への進出は外交上の対立がないぶん、東南アジアの銀行のほうが有利に進められる可能性がありますね。

Maybank plans organic growth

Unlike some of its rivals which have taken up strategic stakes in Chinese lenders, Maybank plans to grow there organically, its president and chief executive officer (CEO) Datuk Seri Abdul Wahid Omar said. The group currently has three branches in the Greater China region - one each in Hong Kong, Shanghai and Beijing - and plans to eventually add more in other key cities in a bid to support robust trade and investment flows between China and Asean. "There's no intention to do mergers and acquisitions in this region. For us, we think organic growth is appropriate. We aim to expand our operations into other key cities in China, and also in provinces that are bordering Asean," he said at a press conference here in conjunction with the official opening of its Beijing branch yesterday. Maybank's closest rival at home, CIMB Group, has a 19.9 per cent stake in Bank of Yingkou, a mid-sized lender based in northeast China, while Affin Holdings Bhd has a 23.5 per cent stake in Hong Kong-based Bank of East Asia. The Greater China operations are currently the third largest overseas contributor to the Maybank group's profit before tax (PBT), after Singapore and Indonesia. Maybank, which first ventured into the region in 1962 with a branch in Hong Kong, has grown steadily there over the last two years. PBT from Greater China expanded sixfold to US$37 million (RM1.1 billion) in the first six months of this year, accounting for 3 per cent of the Maybank group's PBT, compared with just US$6 million (RM18.3 million) in the full financial year ended June 30, 2010. The assets, meanwhile, have doubled to US$5.5 billion (RM16.8 billion). Abdul Wahid noted that with the new branch, Maybank, currently the fourth largest banking group in Asean by assets, is in a stronger position to support two-way trade between Asean and China which has increased rapidly over the years, reaching US$363 billion (RM1,109 billion) in 2011. Two-way trade between Malaysia and China alone has been growing at a compounded annual growth rate of over 22 per cent since 2000, reaching US$90 billion (RM275 billion) in 2011. "We are now well-positioned to leverage on our three branches to capture opportunities in financing and corporate banking business within the region," he remarked. Maybank is aiming to be the top cross-border bank in the context of Asean-China by 2015, said KH Cheong, Maybank's CEO for Greater China and Northeast Asia. The Maybank Beijing branch, located in China World Tower, the city's tallest building, will focus on wholesale banking services denominated in foreign currencies, primarily US dollars. Apart from targeting Malaysian and Asean clients with investments and business in China, the bank is also looking at supporting profitable Chinese state-owned enterprises that have approval to borrow in foreign currency
