Malaysia nominated for Asia's top IPO market this year

Cementing Malaysia's status as the top IPO market in Asia this year, Prime Minister Najib Razak launches the US$2 billion (RM6.339 billion) initial public offering (IPO) of IHH Healthcare Bhd, the biggest private hospital operator in Asia.

IHH's listing follows the US$3 billion (RM9.509 billion) IPO of the Felda Global Ventures Holding last week, which was the largest IPO in the world after Facebook Inc.

The IPOs in Malaysia have defied the trend in other markets such as Singapore, where motor racing company Formula One have deferred its nearly US$3 billion (RM9.509 billion) listing.

As a result, Kuala Lumpur has been competing head-on with China's Shenzhen for the top IPO market in Asia.

Moreover, asset manager Blackrock, Kuwait Investment Authority and 20 other major "cornerstone" investors have committed to purchase 62 percent of the shares that will be offered during the IPO.

Abdul Jalil Abdul Rasheed, Chief Executive Officer of Aberdeen Islamic Asset Management Sdn, commented: "The only reason I can see why Malaysian IPOs have gone ahead is simply because there is a very large institutional investor base here that is cash-rich."

"Malaysia is now the largest IPO market in Asia...I think it's just that Malaysia is probably having some time in the sun now that other markets are quite weak," he added.

IHH is the healthcare division of Khazanah Nasional and is one of the major healthcare providers in the region, where rising incomes are stimulating demand for better services.

With its dual listing in Singapore, IHH joins the likes of Raffles Medical Group, India's Fortis Healthcare, Bangkok Dusit Medical Services and Kuala Lumpur-listed KPJ Healthcare Bhd.
